Meet Wholly Mother // Tiff Brooks
This blog is nearly two months in and we still have not properly introduced ourselves. So, without further adieu, we are going to take turns introducing each other on the blog. I, Diane, get the honor of introducing Tiffany Brooks.
I was living in Kona and my husband was asked to play music for a wedding on Oahu. He asked me to tag along for the weekend. I didn’t know the details about where we would stay or any plans for the weekend, but in the spirit of spontaneity and wanting to see more of the world, I said of course! We ending up staying at the Brooks home on Oahu where they lived with their two kids and hosted hundreds of people as a place of peace and worship over the course of several years. Tiff showed us the room she had set up for or family, complete with so many thoughtful details, and then went to her garage to lead a boot camp workout for some ladies.
I am not usually quick to volunteer information about myself or make small talk with strangers, but we ended up talking for hours and going to the mall together. A few months later our families moved to South Africa together. We both eventually moved back to Kona and fostered the friendship that had began years ago on Oahu. We could talk for hours but my favorite times with her have been when we drink coffee side by side surrounded by all of our kids (nine total...for now at least).
Tiff lives her life with a steady strength and discipline that plays out in daily life, whether she’s working out in the first light of the day or advocating for her seven year old daughters health. To be her friend is to know a force of peace and grace and a gentle crudeness (a term coined by my husband). She mothers with empathy and creativity and protects the honor of her family with a ferocity matched only by an actual mama bear. It is a true honor to walk through life with her, in the depths of despair and the victories of overcoming, in speaking truth to each other, in loving each other’s children and now in sharing the overflow of who we are as individuals and as a team with the world through Wholly Mother.
